lyrics born

I went to Austin this weekend to see Lyrics Born. We went up mid-afternoon, wandered around downtown, then went out for drinks, and eats and drinks, and drinks. We met up with Chris and Claudia at their sweet hotel room, drank at the hotel bar, then went cuba librelooking for a place to eat. It smelled fantastic outside Louie’s, so we went in there, but they were rather resistant to our shorts/t-shirts/flip-flop-wearin’, no-reservation-havin’ asses eating at their establishment, so they made the wait too long. Instead, we ate at Cuba Libre, a tapas bar, and had great calamari and jerk chicken satay.

I’d never been to the Parish, and it was a great venue. The atmosphere was very mellow before the show — they were playing great hypnotic-Jamaican-chill stuff; it made me wish the place were littered with a decadent amount of huge pillows to lay around on. And, (apparently) as always, Aaron attracted some weird dancing freak guy. This guy would stand in the middle of the room, by himself, facing us, and suddenly bust into odd little dance moves, eventually dancing backwards out of sight. Occasionally we’d see him yell suddenly for no reason. When JR passed him later in the evening, he said he discovered the guy was 6-months past due for a shower. Ugh.

Pigeon John, the opener, was terrific; very funny. And then Lyrics Born went on. It was SUCH a fantastic show; that man can drop lyrics crazy-fast. Luckily for Claudia he did “I’m Just Raw” (which I mentioned in an earlier post), and it was incredible. By the way, Aaron is a dancin’ FOOL! Ladies — he has the moves! But by the end, I knew I was too old for this shit. I had sobered up, my feet hurt, I was tired of yelling, and I thought he would never stop with the encores and the “I can’t hear you!”. I felt so old when I was actually relieved that he wasn’t starting up yet another song. I guess there can be too much of a good thing.

Please note that the ladies should take notice of my moves, not the crazy, smelly hobos.

And no crazy, smelly ladies either, please.

Also, by the time he was finally done with the set I think everyone in that place was ready for it to be over, no matter how awesome it was. He wore us out!
