migraine: heightened senses

I woke up with a migraine this morning. I felt kind of funny at dinner last night, and I had this relentless tic in the corner of my eye — I wonder if that's a new kind of precursor to my migraines.

My medicine seemed to work, so I was able to get up and move around. I noticed a definite difference in the smell from one room to another. I could smell that Winston had peed near the front door a long time ago. We went to get breakfast, and in the car I could smell that someone had been cutting some sort of foliage, but it wasn't grass. The smell of it was overwhelming, but JR didn't smell it at all.

When I got home, I laid down on the couch with a sleep mask on. As I laid there, I was assaulted by the noise. Deafening was Winston, panting relentlessly after he'd jumped up next to me on the couch. Then there was the ticking of the big clock on my fireplace (and repetitive noises get to me even on a good day.) After that I could hear all kinds of things; the sound of a leafblower that was pretty far away, a jet passing really high overhead, Winston stopping breathing because he thought that was thunder, and the refrigerator in the laundry room kicking on — and what I knew immediately was the high-pitched ring of two beer bottles vibrating against each other in the fridge. That was really weird.

Of course, with all that noise I couldn't relax, so I had to get up and blog about it.

I've developed a tic in my eye just reading your terrificly detailed description of all the annoying sounds one tries to ignore. ;) I rarely get migraines, but my cluster headaches tend to combine with tension headaches and cause the same hyper-awareness of sounds (though not scents).

Rest up. You're not missing much outside today.

A trick I learned for dealing with repetetive noises is to listen to them instead of being annoyed by them. It's a little hard to explain, but it's something along the lines of paying attention to the noise instead of being annoyed when you try to not pay attention to it. It works for me when I'm trying to get to sleep and something noisy is going on. I just focus on the noise instead of trying to go to sleep.
