sxsw envy (updated)
I'm dying over here. I have lived in San Antonio for almost 6 years, and I haven't ONCE been to SXSW|interactive. How is that possible?!?! It's a travesty, right? I haven't been because I am always too busy to go. And this is the year that's really a kick in the nuts. Let me just review all of my own personal internet rock stars that are there RIGHT NOW...
- dooce. DOOCE, PEOPLE!!!! and she had lunch with people just like me!!! you do not understand how much i love this lady - she's like a little treasure! a tall one, but a treasure nonetheless.
- kottke. they did a panel together. I could've seen jason kottke in the flesh. he's only like the best blogger of all time.
- blurbomat. aka jon armstrong. aka dooce's husband. aka the scrumptious bearded one. argh!
- heather champ. my flickr goddess. god.damnit. this woman is the embodiment of strength and poise and talent and beauty. she's so good with flickr that they hired her! i mean, come on! she and her husband derek powazek (the "champazeks") publish JPG magazine in their spare time.
- powazek. yes, *the* derek powazek. as in um, just technorati, blogger, {fray}, ephemera, and a list apart. slacker.
- veen. friggin' veen, man! you may know him from adaptive path, but recently Google bought AP's measuremap, and veen went with it.
- mightygirl. yeah - maggie mason. her "overheard" blogs are side-splitting. she's the one who made my favorite t-shirt in the world: "I FUCK LIKE A GIRL." she also runs mightygoods, which rocks. and she's part of another internet rock star power couple: her husband is b-may, bryan mason, another founder of adaptivepath.
- As i've come across more pics/blog entries that are like a knife to the stomach of my sad no-sxsw-going self, i've added:
allison headley (bluishorange)
ev williams (pyra, blogger)
mena trott (sixapart, movabletype)
jim coudal (coudal partners)
jason fried (37signals, signal v. noise)
tom coates (plasticbag.org)
jesse james garrett (IA god, adaptivepath)
peter merholz (peterme)
caterina fake (flickr)
stewart butterfield (flickr)
george oates (ludicorp)
jeffrey zeldman (zeldman, alistapart, the definitive book on web standards)
eric meyer (meyer.com, all things CSS) - And don't forget all the folks behind muledesign, wikipedia, meetup.com, upcoming.org, creativecommons, wordpress, craigslist, skinnycorp/threadless/OMG Clothing

I'd rather go camping than SXSW, but I'm weird that way. :)
Schedule your vacation for '07 right now. Block out a whole two weeks, and attend SXSW next year!
There's more irony to go around. My brother, a fine arts graduate from UTSA, is moving to Austin and I can't seem to get him to realize how incredibly cool that's going to be for him. A thriving arts scene, hip and geeky and cool people everywhere (esp. this time of year, with SXSW), a city that actually respects and protects nature and has a 95+ year old annual kite festival. He's so immersed in his work, I'm not sure much else is getting processed.

Plus, Dave Willis and Brendon Small at [ austin swim ] this Sunday (when I'll be in D.C.). Augh. I feel your pain.

i really just want to meet Mightygirl, mostly so i can shamelessly hit on her. or just walk up to her and grin a stupid grin.

It's Spring Break. You can pretty much hit on any gal of the right age range, complete with grinning a stupid grin, and your behavior will fit right in with the norm. The further south you travel, the truer this becomes!
P.S. I should go on record that if I had a means and opportunity to attend SXSW, I would. I'm not sufficiently lacking in motive, even if camping really does sound better than being among masses of people (even the incredibly smart, talented and hip).
