can of worms, opened

I seem to have ruffled some feathers with my last post, overtwitterers. I should write controversial posts more often! ;)

I was responding to the comments and my response got so long that it really turned into a new post. So here it is:

geekgal: i applaud your efforts at taking a look at your twittering and creating separate accounts for separate audiences. that's a great idea.

joe: i too love alanna's tweets. my day is truly better knowing that her neighbor's dog should get a record contract.

anna: thanks! i have a few more ideas for twitter that i may be posting soon.

juleed: eek! the first rule of twitter should be "don't follow a teen twitterer."

jr: swaggle is great. to clue others in to how we use it, we have a local neighborhood group that we started so we weren't always twittering non-locals with our neighborhood dinner/drink invites. we're learning etiquette there as we go too. for example - only respond if it's affirmative. 12 people all replying "can't make it" gets aggravating and adds up. also - don't accidentally SMS the neighborhood list asking where you can buy, say, pot. as a completely fictional example.

anyhoo...

just to clarify - this post was NOT about anyone in particular. it was about a number of twitterers i follow or used to follow, all rolled into one.

people have different styles of twittering, and some of those styles just don't match up; i get that. it's just disappointing to me personally because I would love to know what's going on in these people's lives, but the way they twitter makes it really difficult.

i'm not saying i'm a twitter saint; i have my days, especially when i'm at events, when i twitter a lot, but on the whole, i don't have time to twitter more than 2, *maybe* 3 times a day. i try to think about my audience; i only @reply when i know that half of my followers know or follow the person i'm replying to. otherwise, i take it to a direct message.

i'll be writing another post on this topic (and possible solutions) in the near future. stay tuned.

btw - i did not twitter about JR's gorgeous locks. he hijacked my iPhone and forged a tweet. i have to keep my eye on that one. :)

I'll take my worms extra crispy. ;)

FWIW, my blog entry wasn't a response to yours. Like you, it was something that has been building for awhile (actually, the biggest complaints have been about my high volume of hybrid-related tweets) so it was as good a time as any.

It *is* difficult to follow hundreds of people and not accrue a high tweet count, though I learned pretty quickly that many people don't respond to @replies or do so very late.

Twitter would rock if we could have multiple "Special Interest Groups" (in which we can add particular folks to follow, and address particular public replies to)--like the BBS days of yore. That would replace the slightly cumbersome need for multiple Twitter accounts that I am adopting and migrating to. That way you could tweet pet-related tweets to folks you know are pet lovers; cooking related tweets to... etc.

and there you go, scooping my next post before i get a chance to finish it. it's very much along those lines.

i'm just glad to see a new blog post from you! whatever it takes, girl! i'm enjoying the discussion, i just wish i'd had time to jump into the fray earlier. i kind of threw that stinkbomb out there and then went off to throw our big Backyard 2.0 Launch Party and subsequent day of recovery, and then i come back to all kinds of mayhem! but it's good to see everyone's different points and suggestions.

i deal with an interesting dilemma here - half my followers/people i follow are here in SF, almost exclusively googlers, and the other half are all our old friends back in Texas. it's hard to juggle.

I hate to make this "all about me" but I'm a little disappointed nobody caught onto my "end of the day" made up quote by the mysterious "Darenia" who may or may not be a combination of two separate people.

oh, lee. i'm so sorry. it was very clever, i see now. i was so wrapped up in the escalating commentary that i didn't get it. i thought you were just trying to distract everyone with your screwball antics, lighten the mood. i underestimated you.

LEE!!! I am just NOW getting the joke! I thought you were quoting some Greek philosopher or something. I did not know that name was pronounced Dare-ren-yuh.

Again, you affirm my funniest person I know comment.
